Internal Theft: 8 Common Ways Employees Steal

January 28, 2014

Anyone who has been in the restaurant industry has undoubtedly heard horror stories of employees stealing from restaurant owners.  These stories are often viewed as fables warning against lackluster management or lazy managers.  Despite this belief, however, these matters are very real and any restaurant owner or manager should be aware of what some of the most common tricks are and what to look out for.  The National Federation of Independent Business estimates that as many as 30% of the average company’s employees do steal and the National Restaurant Association estimates that these thefts account for roughly 4% of annual sales.  This is a huge number!  Say, for example, your restaurant does $1,000,000 in sales this year. At 4%, your business would be losing $40,000 dueContinue Reading …

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

NRF 2014 Recap

January 17, 2014

Good Morning! This is the Restaurant Technology Guys reporting Live from New York.  Jeremy and I have been here all week at the National Retail Federation’s Big Show, the largest retail show in the country.  The show has been going on for 103 years!  Why are we here? Typically retail groups adopt this technology before the restaurant groups do.  Be it because their volume is higher or the profits are higher, usually, we’ll see retail adopt the technology first then it comes to restaurants.  We’re here on a scouting mission and we want to cover some of it and report it to you.

Restaurant business owners and managers spend thousands of dollars every year investing in POS systems, hardware, software, and maintenance.  All of the money spent on these components is spent in the hopes of automating their business and providing the best service to the customer.  What happens to these investments when they are handed over to the staff? Unfortunately, most employees don’t really care about the restaurant’s hardware and would never dream of handling their own laptops or cell phones in the same fashion they handle the POS hardware. As an owner, what can you do to help get the most out of your POS investment?  Here are some simple tips to help you extend the life of your hardware. 1. Do a daily spot checkContinue Reading …
