What You Can Learn From Starbucks’ Mobile Pay

September 5, 2018

Have you ever wondered: who uses mobile pay? How prevalent is paying with your phone? Although it is not the game-changer people were predicting, mobile pay still has steady users. And, it revolves around one group of users in particular: Starbucks mobile app users.

The Starbucks app is more popular than any other app that allows users to pay via their smartphone, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, according to a recent survey.

This year, some 23.4 million people ages 14 and over will use the Starbucks mobile app to make a point-of-sale purchase at least every six months, according to the survey, which is the latest from data and research firm eMarketer. That’s compared to the 22 million who will use Apple Pay, 11.1 million Google Pay users and 9.9 million Samsung Pay users, the firm found.

So what does this mean?

People will use a mobile pay app if:

  1. It is convenient.
  2. Fast
  3. Provides a great experience.
  4. Rewards you for using it.

This is 100% true because the Starbucks mobile app provides all four of those things, seamlessly.

Running late for work? Better order my coffee ahead of time so I can just swing by and pick it up. Boom. Done.

Need an afternoon pick-me-up? Whip out the app, walk to the shop and you are in and out like the superstar you are. And would you look at that, I just got a free drink. Win!

We have all done it before. And when you leave with your drink in-hand, you look at the customers waiting in line and think, “Man, so glad I don’t have to do that anymore. Y’all should’ve gotten the app!”

Users feel empowered and the app allows them to integrate their caffeine fix right into the flow of their day; never stopping, always going. THAT is what every developer and owner/operator should strive for.

“The Starbucks app is one of the bigger success stories in mobile proximity payments,” said eMarketer forecasting analyst Cindy Liu. “It has gained traction thanks to its ability to tie payments to its loyalty rewards program. For users of the app, the value of paying with their smartphone is clear and simple: You can save time and money at the register, all while racking up rewards and special offers.”

The Starbucks app was also recently ranked the most popular restaurant loyalty app, according to a different survey.

If you want to get into the mobile pay game, take a look at the leader, they are doing it right.
